It is a fault of previous generations to believe they could change the world, it is a fault of ours that we believe we cannot.
"No matter what you do, you will never be able to satisfy everyone. The powerful of this world are no different from ordinary people - however hard you might try to please and serve them, they won't really appreciate it. What is more, they can easily become irritated by some small mistake and have you punished, beaten or thrown in jail. And as for those who depend on you, however much you may take care of them you will never be able to satisfy them fully. However well intentioned your friends may be, in most cases if you follow their advice you will just become more and more entangled in samsara.
There is no end to overcoming adversaries and looking after kin. It is all a waste of time. To help others you must first perfect yourself, and to perfect yourself you have to cut these three ties:
Obeying important people,
Getting entangled in futile attempts to help others,
Listening to what people say."
